Welcome, October! 🎃
This week we have our first unit test for spelling and reading (also known as benchmark testing), therefore the students will not have a new spelling list this week or a spelling test on Friday.
We will spend this week reviewing the big concepts the students have learned so far this year-main idea and details, synonyms and antonyms, nouns, adjectives, subjects and predicates-in preparation for the unit test at the end of the week. Both 2nd grade classrooms will split the test up into two days, Part I on Thursday and Part II on Friday. The students will be coming home with at least one piece of classwork material everyday that parents are encouraged to review with their child in preparation for Thursday and Friday.
Again, there will be no spelling packets or spelling test this week!
Our Pizza Hut “Book It!” program begins this week! Each student should have brought home their October “Book It” calendar last week-each day of October has an icon of a cat on it. Each day that they complete their 20 minutes of reading, the student colors in the little picture on that calendar day. If your child wants to set a reading goal larger than 20 minutes per night-I highly encourage you to set that goal together! 🙂
On the last day of every month, the student will turn in their completed, colored-in calendar to me and will earn a completion grade of 20 points, as well as a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. Please display the calendar somewhere visible at home (in the kitchen, room, etc.) so that the students stay on top of their reading, and stay excited about their “Book It!” calendars!

About the Teacher
My name is Ms. Dittmer and this is my first year teaching in the wonderful community that is St. Giles. I am a native Oak Parker, Fenwick Friar, and graduate of Creighton University. I am so excited for the 2017-2018 school year and truly believe this will be one of the best ones yet!
This fall, look for our 2nd graders harvesting carrots, investigating different habitats in the school garden, and come visit us to meet our classroom pet, Biscuit!
