Summer 2020 Resources

i-Ready:

This summer, you will continue to work on your i-Ready learning path which you began at the start of this year. i-Ready activities target specific skills based on the diagnostic tests taken earlier this year.

The encouraged amount of time to work on i-ready is 45 minutes in math and 45 minutes in reading exercises per week.

Please reach out in an email if you lose your login information.

Summer Reading:

Check the summer 2020 Reading List for the grade you are entering. For example, if you are entering 7th grade, choose a book from the 7th grade list.

Grades 4-8 Summer Reading Lists

Read one (or more!) book from the list over break. There will be a reading quiz in the first week of school.

What’s Coming Up This Week Memorial Day Weekend

LA: We will begin the week going over conclusion paragraphs. Final drafts of the persuasive essay will be due Friday next week. You can use the Zoom chat sign up on my page to sign up for a conference with me.

Reading: We will be moving towards the end of our novel this week. We have been taking on more than one chapter at a time to stay on track and read the chapters that go together to give information about Billy and his hunting. Use the audios on Youtube and stay on track with your reading.

SS: Our test on chapter 12 will be Tuesday. Wednesday we will have a review assignment for the civilizations we have covered this year.

Religion 205: This week we will end the Gospel of Matthew by reading the Easter story and reflecting on Matthew’s purpose in writing this Gospel.

What’s Coming Up Next Week!

Reading: We will be taking the i-Ready 3rd Diagnostic this week on Tuesday. It will be just like when we took these tests in school. They are about seeing how you are doing with the skills you have worked on this year and give you updates on how you are growing!

The i-Ready diagnostic should take about 45 minutes and is not mandatory. However, it would be great info. for you and for us to see how you are doing on those skills you have been focusing on this year in class and on i-Ready.

We will be reading 2 chapters at a time this week as we make our way into the last few weeks of the year. That sounds weird to say. I know you guys can do it, and we will be making the final push to finish our novel, have discussions, look at some new vocabulary and literary devices.

Keep an eye out for Zoom times where we will play a literary device game and read the chapters together!

SS: We will finish one more lesson on daily life for an ancient Roman and prepare for a test on chapter 12 next week.

LA: By the end of next week, Body 3 will be due and we will begin reviewing the 3 parts of a conclusion paragraph. Stay on top of your drafts because we will be talking final draft before you know it!

Religion We will be heading into the last chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew’s gospel ends with the story of the Paschal Mystery which we remembered at Easter not so long ago!

We can do this!

About the Teacher - Jennifer Jawicki

My name is Jennifer Jawicki, and I have been at St. Giles for almost 5 years. I teach sixth grade ELA, Social Studies, and Religion. One of the reasons why teaching at St. Giles is a blessing is because the faith-centered community is a welcoming place for teachers, students, and parents to gather and celebrate weekly mass as well as discuss why faith is such an integral part of our values. My philosophy of education is grounded in the encouragement of students to take ownership of their own learning by asking questions and bringing their curiosity to the classroom. While encouraging students to seek knowledge, I believe it is vital that students feel inspired and encouraged to share what they are wondering and feeling every day in a supportive gathering place like St. Giles.
