In RELIGION: The theme will be about “the Holy Spirit” shows us how to love ourself and others. “Jesus Loves Me”! Children often feel overwhelmed by their problems and the choices that loom before them. They struggle with the tug-of-war in their heart: their conscience directs them to do what is right. This is the Holy Spirit. The light that shines inside us that helps guide us.
In READING: The Kindergarteners will complete the Read-Aloud story “Farfallina and Marcel” By: Holly Keller. This is a gentle story about sustaining friendship in the face of change. One spring, a young gosling, Marcel, and a caterpillar, Farfallina, become close friends. Similar in temperament and considerate of one another’s strengths and weaknesses, they like spending time together. One day, Farfallina feels very strange and she climbs a tree to rest. After weeks of patiently waiting for her return, Marcel realizes that he must go on without her. When the two meet again, they don’t recognize one another at first: one has become a beautiful butterfly and the other an elegant goose. They soon discover that, though they look different, they are still friends.
In MATH: The Kindergarteners will begin reading and making ten frames. The Kindergarteners will work on reading, writing, making tens and ones. The Kindergarteners will also begin to count up, and back with fluency. In conclusion, the Kindergarteners are practicing printing their numbers on a daily basis. And I must say, they are doing a wonderful job! The Kindergarteners are doing an amazing job of counting by ones to 100, tens to 100 and fives to 100. Beginning in March, we will start woking on counting by two to 100. The students also have mastered, reading, using, and making a calendar.
In PHONICS and PHONEMIC AWARENESS: The Kindergarteners will begin working in Letterbox Hh. Your child is will continue to segment CVC words (Consonant, Vowel, Consonant phonemically, and phonetically). We have worked on the short vowel sounds a, e, i, & o. The Kindergarteners will also practice, sounding out words that have consonant blends at the beginning and ending of words.
In HANDWRITING: The Kindergarteners will continue to work on correct Zaner Bloser handwriting formation of numbers 21-30 (using tens and ones) and lowercase letters. I would like the Kindergarteners to build automaticity of correct handwriting into their creative writing. Beginning in March, the Kindergarteners will work on Handwriting every day during Homeroom.
In CREATIVE WRITING: The Kindergarteners are working on sound spelling daily at school, please reinforce this at home. A great way to help your son/daughter sound spell, is having your Kindergartener write out the grocery list every time you go to the store. The Kindergarteners are using creative writing in all subject areas at this time. Please help them enjoy writing at home by providing them with supplies such as markers, paper, and a stapler. A little office area that is Kinder-friendly.
In SOCIAL STUDIES: The Kindergarteners will share the Magazine “It’s Presidents’ Day” The Students will learn about the two U.S. presidents for whom we celebrate Presidents’ Day, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will be able to read a simple U.S. map and answer questions.
In SCIENCE: We will complete our Dental Health Unit this week, and begin our Space Unit next week.

About the Teacher
I have been teaching Kindergarten for 27 years, and living my childhood career dream. “All I ever wanted to learn, I learned in kindergarten is true”! And now I’m sharing it every day with my students at St. Giles!
At St. Giles, I have found a faith filled environment, and a “School Family”. The teachers are caring and dedicated individuals who deliver a quality education which also strengthens the students’ spiritual values first acquired in their own home. St. Giles makes that “School & Family” connection! We all work together to build peace, respect for each other, the environment, and the community. I am proud to be a part of a school that leads by attitude, example, and service.
