WELCOME HOME TO MY THIRD GRADE- March 30– April 3-2020
Please go to HOMEWORK PAGE to find instructions for e-learning work for each day. I will also give instructions on how to implement these e-learning plans. The e-learning work will be posted on Monday but I am posting important information to read on the implementation of these plans. God bless you and you are all in my prayers.
I extend to all of my dear parents a warm welcome to our third grade family at St. Giles School. May the Good God extend His blessings and graces on your families especially your precious children whom I am privileged to teach and humbly guide them on their journey to heaven. Your assistance, prayers, and guidance for me and your children on this journey will be needed to ensure a successful school year. Please feel free to contact me about any concerns regarding your children, so that together, we may address these challenges and provide solutions to resolve them..
Regarding IREADY IN MATH AND READING , both third grades are using teacher assigned lessons based on skills being taught now in our classrooms in math and reading. My class is happy about this decision and are doing well on their lessons. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we are still in training concerning this new program.
Wednesday-2:00 Dismissal
There will be Snacks in third grade on a daily basis because of late lunch times. You have received a brief letter on the types of snacks to bring in accordance with the no nut policy. It will be a working snack so it will not interfere with our studies.
All parents in third grade are invited to create an account to view their child’s grades. Science grades are viewed on Dr..Hawk’s site. Also, if a student’s grade is left blank, it is because the student has make-up work or has to redo the assignment or test.
All of my grades will be posted on a weekly basis.
THE STUDENTS WILL TAKE HOME THEIR MATH CLASSWORK SHEETS TO HELP THEM ON THEIR HOMEWORK.IT WILL BE IN THEIR MATH FOLDERS. ALSO THEIR WRITTEN WORK.
All unexcused late homework will be one point off the 5 point scale when handed in the next day. Please make sure students have completed all homework and have them in their folders. Please check their homework and assist as needed especially our new Math Common Core Homework. They will need assistance.Quizzes are given on Fridays-study CHECK MY PROGRESS WORKSHEETS IN MATH FOLDERS.The students will be working on written constructed responses to explain their answers,in addition to showing their work.It is a third grade common core standard that all teachers have to teach. This will soon be included in homework.
Please check Math Folders for homework, vocabulary sheet, and foldables
***Please check all homework folders and student planners on a daily basis.I have a homework website in case these items are not brought home.***
****ALL STUDENTS MUST SHOW THEIR WORK ON ALL MATH HOMEWORK, CLASSWORK, AND TESTS. ANSWERS ONLY,EVEN IF CORRECT, WILL BE MARKED WRONG IF THIS IS NOT DONE.******
STUDY ALL MULTIPLICATION FACTS DAILY-
HIGHLIGHTERS ARE NEEDED FOR PROBLEM SOLVING IN MATH AND OTHER SUBJECTS. Students need them for we are using them daily for Close Reading and questions in all subjects. Thank you.
Religion- The students were introduced to classroom Lenten classwork activities at their classroom shrine and other handout activities and are working on them on a daily basis. They studied and meditated on the first 9 Stations of the Cross. The students visit Jesus in the Eucharist in our chapel in the Parish Center-they never want to miss these visits.
Spelling- The students will have Spelling Lists this week. They will have a Pretest on the Regular List on Mondays to determine who will get the Challenge List. After conferences with parents, I decided to change the rules for getting a Challenge list. If they get 100 on Pretest or miss three or less, they will get the Challenge List. The words they miss on the regular list will substitute the words on the Challenge List. The rest of the students will receive the Regular List. Spelling Word Lists will be posted weekly on this website and Spelling City’s website in case students misplace their Assigned Spelling List. Spelling City.org is a free optional website that students can use to study their Spelling .
English- The students finished first part of their unit on adjectives. The second half introduces adverbs which we will take at a later time. The Aspire assessment in writing is for students to write a personal narrative using these types of lessons. The students worked hard on their personal narrative and they are proudly displayed in their hallway. They will be writing another longer, well developed personal narrative in our classroom in two weeks. Both Dr. Hawk and I will be using writing prompts from the OCS portal on typical Aspire prompts for personal narratives. This week students will work on their daily e-learning plans.
Reading-The students will be learning QAR Strategies to identify the type of question in order to use the right strategy to answer it correctly. That is why highlighters are needed for this strategy. The students will be using the QAR strategies taught to answer questions by going back to the text and underlining the clues and answers in the text.Every week, the students will be writing constructed responses to reading questions. The concepts in reading are: underlining text evidence to write their answers, elements of Genre, analyzing illustrations to enhance comprehension, vocabulary-highlighted in yellow in text
Reading- Last week the students began their new Unit 5 in reading. This week they will read The New Hoop to be used with a graphic organizer on point of view. They are improving on their written constructed responses on reading questions but need to have more details in their responses.
Please check homework folders daily- both Math folders and Boomerang folders. You will receive activity sheets to help them learn these skills only AFTER the skill is taught in class. These activity sheets are not graded or returned to teacher. They are used only at home.
Math- Last week the students finished their unit on measurement. The students began their new unit on Perimeter and Area and will continue to work in this chapter in finding area and perimeter. Please study all multiplication and division facts daily. They have studied all their multiplication facts There will be daily multiplication time tests in Math. Multiplication tests on facts learned on Fridays.
Social Studies- Last week, the students finished their unit on Lewis and Clark, pioneer life, and the Civil War. The students took a quiz on the chapter on Friday. Dr. Hawk and I decided not to include Science and Social Studies in the e-learning plans this week.
Science- Mrs.Hawk teaches both third grade Science classes. All concerns and questions concerning Science are to be discussed with her.
