St. Giles Reopening FAQ
Thank you to all of our families who submitted questions regarding the reopening of school in August. We have compiled FAQ’s for you to review. We are receiving updates from the Archdiocese regularly and will keep you informed as more information becomes available. FAQ’s will be updated weekly as additional questions are received and plans are finalized.
Our Health/Safety Committee is working diligently to go through all of the protocols from the Archdiocese in each of our buildings to ensure that we are meeting the necessary requirements for reopening and providing a safe environment for our faculty, staff and students. There is a lot of work to be done but we have been working all summer on preliminary plans and have much of it in place already. We are in great shape for an August 19 opening. Additionally, our Academics Committee is working to review our curriculum maps and align them with the Archdiocese priority standards for a successful academic opening.
In an effort to provide a less hectic environment for faculty and staff to execute new protocols and students to learn them, we have decided to stagger which K-8 grades are on campus throughout the first 3 days of school. Beginning August 19, preschool will meet all 3 days in order to establish routines and have students who are not daily attendees learn the protocols.
For the first week of school, each day will be a “Wednesday schedule” with dismissal at 2:00 p.m. Kids Klub will be available before school beginning at 7:00 am and after school from 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Families utilizing Kids Klub on these days must be registered. To prevent gathering outside and to maintain a safe physical distance, students will be allowed to enter the building this year beginning at 7:55 am until 8:15 am. The first class begins at 8:20 am daily.
Wednesday, August 19: Second, Fifth, Eighth grades
Thursday, August 20: First, Fourth, Seventh grades
Friday, August 21: Kindergarten, Third, Sixth grades
On Monday, August 24th all students will be on campus.
There are many things you can do at home to help your child and family prepare for our reopening. Please begin preparing students now for wearing masks for longer periods of time. For example, have children wear masks during a movie night or while out for a walk, etc. The more they begin to wear them for longer periods of time, the more comfortable they will become with masks and other COVID protocols. In addition, it is our expectation that all families are adhering to recommended guidance at home. Please be mindful of the guidelines from the IDPH and the state regarding masks, maintaining safe physical distancing, and avoiding large gatherings. We are doing everything in our power to create a safe environment inside the school walls, but we need all families to take the necessary precautions at home to keep everyone safe. A successful reopening requires a commitment between family and school to adhere to all health and safety protocols and recommendations.
St. Giles School is currently at capacity with all grade levels full for the 2020-2021 school year. As always, we are committed to a small learning environment for our students — something that we believe is even more important today as we implement social distancing and health and safety protocols.
If you are interested in enrolling your child at St. Giles School this fall, please submit an online application and your child will be added to the waitlist.
St. Giles School will open in full. That means in-person, five days a week starting August 19. We are working diligently to create a school environment that is both conducive to student learning as well as compliant with all state and Archdiocesan expectations for reopening.
Classrooms have been reconfigured to allow age-appropriate desks to be physically distanced for student safety and new scheduling plans will minimize unnecessary movement and contact.
While our beautiful campus has always been a blessing, the school’s outdoor space is an even more meaningful benefit than ever before. Our outdoor classroom will be expanded to give more teachers and students a place to safely interact.
These are just a few examples of how we’re creating a safe learning environment; more details of the Archdiocesan-approved plan will come.
At St. Giles School, we’re committed to bringing our Lion pride back to campus this August. Because we learn better when we can learn together. See you on August 19!
