Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About New Playground
Q: Why are we building a new playground? How old is the current one?
A: The current playground is almost 20 years old. Equipment is wearing out. Over the years, various groups have been working on replacing the equipment. There are also new playground safety guidelines that will be met with new equipment.
Q: How did we get the funding for this brand new playground?
A: St. Giles School earned this playground award from KaBoom! through a rigorous application process. There were three phases that lasted almost six months to come to fruition. Reedy Industries is the corporate partner with KaBoom! and is underwriting 90% of the cost.
Q: Who is KaBoom!? How did Reedy Industries get connected to St. Giles?
A: KaBoom! is a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC. They have built over 17,000 playgrounds across the country. Reedy Industries has worked with KaBoom! for over ten years. St. Giles will be their 13th playground build. In addition to funding, Reedy Industries will bring over 100 volunteers on Saturday May 18th.
Q: How did St. Giles cover the remaining 10% of the cost?
A: Over the past year or two, the PTO has designated funds for the sole purpose of supporting a new playground.
Q: How can I lend a hand?
A: St. Giles needs to recruit 100 volunteers for Build Day and 30 volunteers for Prep Day on Thursday May 16th – Visit www.stgilesschool.org to sign up! Spread the word! Invite friends & family! Please join us to give the current and future lions a brand new playground!
Q: Can I sign up for a shift or do I have to commit to the entire Build Day?
A: The work teams are assembled and taught their task first thing in the morning. KaBoom! has worked with over 1 million volunteers and has found that it is most effective and efficient for people to volunteer the entire day. You will be fed breakfast and lunch – fresh air, music, water, coffee and a t-shirt are also included!
Q: Will these volunteer hours count toward the school requirement?
A: Absolutely! In fact, volunteer this day and your requirement of eight hours will be met, regardless of the number of hours outstanding.
Q: How old do you have to be to volunteer?
A: Volunteers need to be 16 or older to participate in the construction.
Q: Do all volunteer jobs require heavy labor?
A: No, there are many jobs that do not require heavy lifting on Build Day. You can work the registration table, assist with food service / clean-up, security, first aid, painting side projects, etc.
Q: What if it rains?
A: The show must go on, regardless of weather… Work will be paused if lightning is in the area. The project will be completed in one day, so every effort will be made to meet this deadline. If the forecast calls for rain, dress accordingly.
Q: When does the playground “open for business?”
A: Tuesday, May 21st! The playground equipment requires 48 – 72 hours to settle, allowing the cement to properly cure. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday for the volunteers to celebrate. The official ribbon cutting, along with Fr. Carl’s blessing will be Monday, May 20th at 8:15 am. The students can play on Tuesday!
Q: Does the playground have to be a public playground because of this gift?
A: No. Access to our playground remains private.
