A Recap of Our Week & A Glimpse Into Next Week
We are in the midst of learning about place value in math. Important math vocabulary we’ve talked about includes: ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen (these numbers can be thought of as 10 and __ more), tens (the initial digit in a 2- or more digit numeral such as 25, one, penny, and group.
We will continue to focus on place value. Upcoming vocabulary will include regroup, ones (the second digit in a 2- or more digit number), tens, five, and nickel.
Some of the phonics/spelling rules we encounter in first grade are fairly basic while others are more complicated and, therefore, more difficult. This week, students worked really hard to learn and utilize the rule for adding ending -ed and/or -ing. Remembering when to double the last consonant of the base (or root) word and when it is not necessary can be tough! (-;
Since the week of January 30th is Catholic Schools Week, and filled with a variety of different activities each day, we will not be covering any new material in language arts or reading. There will be no new weekly story, no new spelling/phonics, high-frequency words, grammar, or comprehension.
We have been talking about Jesus’ teachings during religion this past week. Listening to and discussing accounts of Jesus’ ministry and teachings helps us to develop the habit of integrating the Word of God into our daily lives.
Next Week – When we pray with Gospel stories, we grow closer to Jesus
The students conducted a couple of small experiments involving light during science. We learned that light is a form of energy that travels in waves. It will travel in one direction unless something blocks it or bends it.
We’ll continue our exploration of light during science.
