Elementary Students (K – 4) – Soccer
Students started off this year with Soccer. Students focused on learning how to maintain control of the soccer ball by dribbling and passing to each other in the gym. This is a hard skill to master on a gym floor where the ball can travel quickly across the floor with a simple tap. At the end of the unit Grades K – 2 finish with Line Soccer and Grades 3 – 4 focus on full court game play and begin to understand offense and defense positions. Students also focused on playing a Cardio Tag game each day at the end of class so be sure to ask your student about – Here Come the Bears, What Time is It Mr. Lion, and Statues and Dribblers.
Intermediate Students & Junior High Students – Soccer
Older students jumped right into soccer game play with 8th grade enjoying Backwards Soccer. Students are now beginning to work with their team to set up their offense and defense positions and referee games. By providing the most playing time during games students are receiving a large dose of cardiovascular exercise in each physical education class.
All students in Grades 1 – 5 are participating in the 2018 Running Challenge. The goal of this activity is to build our endurance. By the time we leave for Christmas Break we should be able to run for 5 minutes without stopping. When we return from break, our next goal will be to increase our distance and take these measurements using the pedometers in class. Students have enjoyed starting class with cardio activities and I have seen a marked improvement in their ability to pace themselves while running.
