Elementary Students (K – 4)
Elementary students started the jump rope unit in the end of February and continued it through March. Younger students focused on learning how to jump once forward and once backward using a single rope while older students focused on jumping for time and tried to become part of the 1:00, 2:00, or 3:00 minute club and started learning basic jump rope tricks. The long rope was also introduced and students learned how to jump while a partner turned the rope and common jump rope rhymes. Lastly, all ages learned the jumps in Chinese jump rope. I enjoyed watching the students challenge themselves to get better and most importantly work together in the group activities. The end of March we focused on scooter games along with loads of cardio work. Students enjoyed games such as Grumpy Bunny, Dinosaur Prowl, and Easter “eggsticle” courses.
Intermediate & Junior High
It’s floor hockey season and Commissioner Wenzel has drafted and set up the leagues. Students will play each team and complete the unit with some All-Star game competitions. For safety, 5th – 7th grade students use a foam ball while 8th grade uses a puck. A focus on offense and defense play is also incorporated and team strategy. 7th and 8th Grade students are encouraged to referee the games and monitor high sticks and game play. Floor Hockey is a high cardio activity that requires agility, speed, and quick thinking. It’s always interesting to watch who enjoys being goalie or center and observe how well everyone learns to maneuver their hockey stick from the wrist rather than their arms.
Junior High students also started the Quidditch unit. Each class we added more elements of the game and will end in a culmination of sorting students into houses and a house to house playoff.
