Elementary Students (K – 4)
Elementary students started a fun unit in February – Parachute Games. As a child, I always remembered this unit at Palos East (my elementary school) as one of my favorites. Back in the days when we played with the parachute, it was gray and drab. The colorful one I get to teach with always makes me smile and I am blessed to have two different sizes to best fit the needs of each classroom. As usual, we always play a cardio game at the start of class as it is important to get the students blood pumping and run some of that energy off in the gym when we can’t get outdoors as much. Games include Giant Cloud, Tent, Run Under, Static Electricity, and the final week – Cat and Mouse for my younger students and Shark Attack for my older students.
Intermediate students worked on their fitness unit. Understanding the importance of fitness, how it changes as your body changes, and how to set realistic and healthy fitness goals are all discussed and paired with interactive classroom activities. 5th & 6th Grade took the Pacer Test and will be tested again in May. 6th Grade also had an opportunity to work with Preschool students while 5th Grade created Fitness Challenges.
Junior High Students
Junior High students played volleyball and volleyball related games. Most days they were on “auto pilot”. They came into the gym, warmed up, and jumped right into game play. I have been very impressed at their skill level, teamwork, and their ability to understand the strategy of the game.
