Art Club is under way and 5th-8th grade students meet once a week during lunch/recess according to their grade levels. Students are working on Sea Life Scratch Paper projects. Students have been drawing fish, sharks, octopus, star fish, crabs and sea weed. They transfer their drawings to black scratch paper. Then, they use wood tools to outline drawings and add textures and solid areas. When students scratch away the black ink, many bright colors are revealed underneath. Once the art club projects are finished, I will upload some to my teacher page and display all of them in the hallway! Later in October, art club students will sculpt clay skulls!
My name is Mary Jo Kent and I am thrilled to be teaching art to K-8th grade students this year at St. Giles! I have experience teaching art at St. Benedict Preparatory School and Deerfield District 109. I will be the Production Assistant for the 8th Grade Musical and the Art Club Moderator and Yearbook Moderator. I look forward to helping students develop their artistic skills, as well as teaching them more about creativity, problem-solving and understanding art history.
I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education. I took additional coursework at the American Academy of Art in Painting. I have exhibited my artwork at the American Academy of Art, the Des Plaines History Center and various art fairs. I have done commissioned artwork for many clients, including Alderwoman Maryann Smith.
I’m looking forward to building positive relationships with students, teachers and staff. I’m excited about being part of the faith community at St. Giles and I want to encourage students to grow in their faith every day!
