A Recap of Our Week & A Glimpse Into Next Week

We took the Chapter 5 test in math and started Chapter 6. Chapter 6 further explores place value by focusing on two-digit addition and subtraction.

We will continue to work through Chapter 6. Vocabulary will include words that we’ve already learned about (add, sum, one, tens, regroup, count on, difference, subtract, count back) but will be used in a new context.

Since we were busy taking the Benchmark assessments for Unit 3 of our reading program, no new spelling/phonics, comprehension, high-frequency words, comprehension, or grammar was covered.

Coming up, Unit 4…

Spelling – Long a made by ai, ay and Possessives (Frank’s papers/the birds’ nest)

High- Frequency words will be enjoy, give, surprise, worry, would

Comprehension – Draw Conclusions

Grammar – Adjectives

During religion, we continued learning and talking about how Jesus shares himself with us today through the Eucharist.

Next, we will begin focusing on the season of Lent.

We ended our week by participating in a STEAM project. (STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Math + Art) Each and every classroom dedicated the last hour of school on Friday to working on different STEAM activities. (Thank you to everyone who sent in cardboard paper towel tubes!!!)

Using paint, paper towel tubes, CDs, and various light sources, the students created spectroscopes which allowed them to see light separated into various colors. We talked about the fact that CDs have evenly spaced grooves that separate out the colors in the light. (This is called diffraction.) When inserted into the paper towel tube at a 45 degree angle, the diffracted light is reflected to your eye by the mirrored surface of the CD!

Next, we will learn about sound waves.

We began talking about United States Monuments this week during Social Studies and will continue with this…
