A Recap of Our Week & A Glimpse Into Next Week
We took the Chapter 6 math test and started Chapter 7. Chapter 7 focuses on organizing information and using tally charts, picture graphs, & bar graphs. Using Skittles, students created their own individual tally charts and answered questions about the charts.
Students then used their individual tally charts to review greater than <, less than >, and equal to =.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day (and rainbows) we took a small break from our investigations into sound waves during science to do a simple chemistry experiment. When the colorful sugar coating on Skittles came in contact with warm water a solution was formed. This process is called dissolving. (We also tried this same experiment using oil instead and found that the oil did not have the same effect. The kids deduced that only warm water will work to dissolve the sugary coating. We left the oil/Skittle experiment to sit over the long weekend and will see what we discover when we return on Monday morning. The students are also now curious whether or not cold water will have the same effect as warm water!)
We will continue with Chapter 7 in math. Important upcoming vocabulary: tally chart, survey, data, graph, picture graph. We’ll also continue learning more about sound waves in science (and will, of course, quickly follow up on our Skittle experiment).

During religion we continued to focus on Lent and we also talked a little bit about St. Patrick.
Since Wednesday and Thursday were half days and we had no school on Friday, we will take time on Monday to discuss St. Joseph in honor of March 19, the feast of St. Joseph. We will also continue learning about Lent.
Both first grade classes also learned a little bit of American Sign Language. Maeve Bell’s mom came to teach us how to sign the Pledge of Allegiance. A great big thank you to Mrs. Bell! The students loved it! (-;
