September 9 – 13

Reading/Phonics/Writing – The students are learning about fiction, reading two-letter blend words, determining the character, setting, events in stories, answering, and asking questions about their reading.  They will be also be learning to use legibility in their handwriting by using shape, size, spacing, and slant to help them make their writing legible.

I will be sending home a list of high frequency words for Second Grade.  Students will be learning different high frequency words in each weekly Unit, but I wanted to send the comprehensive Second Grade list home in case parents want to assist their children with learning these words.  These words are not spelling words that students will be tested on but high frequency/sight/gotta know words that will assist students with their increasing literacy.

High frequency words for this week are as follows:  boy, girl, by, he, here, she, small, want, were, what

Spelling – There will be a spelling pre-test on Monday with the final test on Friday.  There will be two tests this week and spelling packets due on Friday.  Students do not need to turn in each page daily but can wait until Friday to turn in the packets so they will have opportunities to review their work for the spelling tests on Fridays.

Math – The students will be learning about addition as how it relates to subtraction, how to determine missing addends, about facts families, and reading two-step word problems.  They will be having addition math facts tests each week for practicing addition.

Science – The students are learning how to determine if something is matter and to tell the difference between a solid, liquid, and a gas.

Social Studies – The students will be learning that communities are made up of groups of people with different customs and cultures.  They will also be learning about where on Earth is their communities.  In addition, that people need to work together to have a safe community.

Religion – The students will be learning how to identify ways that we as the People of God care for, help, and welcome others.  We become holy by following the examples of Mary, all the saints, and other holy people.  We recognize that saints help to follow Jesus, and we are called to be good and holy.

Important Upcoming Events:
