Special Area Classes

We commit to providing an enriching, well-rounded education for our students and that includes exposure to courses outside of the core curriculum. Although some schools exclude these programs, St. Giles School prioritizes opportunities for creativity, expression and growth. Our instructors foster a lifelong appreciation for physical activity, different cultures and the arts.

Spanish

Spanish at St. Giles is taught from Kindergarten through eighth grade. In Kindergarten and first grade, students learn the basics such as colors, numbers and letter sounds and well as sing songs in Spanish. In second grade, students begin learning sight words followed by small comprehension readings. From third grade through eighth grade, we use the "Spanish for You" curriculum as well as a grammar book for each grade. Students also learn about Spanish culture, food, history, animals and much more.

Art

Our art program follows a progressive structure that builds students' skills and confidence throughout the year. In the fall, the focus is on exploration, foundational techniques, and self-expression in a low-pressure environment. As students grow, winter introduces more structure,

multi-step projects, and a broader range of materials and techniques. By spring, students truly begin to explore what it means to be an artist by developing their own creative voice, making meaningful choices, and using art as a form of self-expression. The year culminates in collaborative work, cross-curricular connections, and preparation for an end-of-year art show and portfolio reflection.

Physical Education

St. Giles students participate in Physical Education twice per week. Each unit begins with introductory and basic locomotor movements for the younger students, and an evaluation of movements for older students to assess their skills. Throughout the year older students learn health principles and are encouraged to continue physical activity as they get older. The main focus is to have students move as much as possible and create an environment with curriculum in which everyone has a chance to be successful!

Music

St. Giles music curriculum encompasses a wide range of skills and activities for students to explore their creativity. Third through eighth grades focuses on music vocabulary and notation (writing your own music!). Students will be working towards identifying elements of music through sight and sound, and are expected to correctly replicate and explain these elements on their own when given either of the visual or audible cues.

Kindergarten through second grade students will also be focusing on similar vocabulary, but condensed to a smaller set of words and elements with a greater emphasis on comprehension and execution. Beginning in late fall, every class will start rehearsing for our Christmas concert.
