Syllabus K-3 Spanish
Tentative Syllabus for Grades K-3 (Spanish)
Students in grades K-3 will cover much of the material in Calico Spanish, Level A (Lessons 1-8). Grades 2 and 3 will move on to Levels B and C of the same method. Also, students are being exposed to Foreign Languages for Kids by Kids online program which offers interactive Spanish lessons with useful vocabulary, phrases and some simple grammar. The spoken and written word are introduced in both methods.
Cultural lessons will accompany the lessons.

Calico Spanish Level A content is as follows:
Level A: I Am Special
In Level A, children interact with Pedro the fish and María the monkey. These new friends help learners begin to talk about themselves in simple ways, including greetings and exchanging basic information like name, age, likes, and description. Level A’s color focus is blue and yellow, and the number focus is 1-3. The calendar focus is days of the week.
Lessons 1-8 (8-12 weeks)
Lesson 1: Hola, ¡soy yo! (Hi, it’s me!) In this unit, children will learn a simple greeting exchange, including telling their names.
Lesson 2: Hola, ¡soy grande! (Hi, I’m big!) In this unit, children will learn to tell their ages.
Lesson 3: Hola, ¡yo sé el día! (Hi, I know what day it is!) In this unit, children will learn to tell what day it is.
Lesson 4: Hola, ¡estoy bien! (Hi, I’m well!) In this unit, children will learn to extend the greeting exchange to answer the question, “How are you?”
Lesson 5: Hola, ¡soy listo! (Hi, I’m smart!) In this unit, children will learn to say something about themselves.
Lesson 6: Hola, ¡me gusta! (Hi, I like it!) In this unit, children will learn to say they like something.
Lesson 7: Hola, ¡soy especial! (Hi, I’m special!) In this unit, children will learn more ways to describe themselves.
Lesson 8: Sí, ¡se puede! (Yes, you can!) In this unit, children will practice talking about themselves.
Please note: Materials are not necessarily presented in this order. Also, songs, stories, games and a flamenco dance class make up part of the curriculum.
Important! – Vocabulary Notebooks / Quizzes
Students are completing their first vocabulary-based quizzes and I’m happy to say that many have done very well (above average).
In order to clarify objectives and the evaluation process for Spanish class, I’d like to point out some tips on helping students develop good study skills.
St. Giles school understands the importance of learning Spanish as a second or world language. Research shows that students who study a second language are often better prepared to meet the academic demands of higher education (i.e. high school/ college/university). One reason is that the study skills involved in language learning are applicable to all subjects.
In an effort to teach students to take good notes, I often allow them to use their notebooks when taking vocabulary quizzes. As was discussed in the power point presented to students on the first day of class, junior high can expect weekly vocabulary tests. Alls students will receive graphic organizers and/or worksheets from me. However, their notebooks are something that they will need to keep up on their own. I will be teaching how to take good notes (as regards second language learning) and double-checking to make sure that all students – grades 4-8 – are keeping record of information given in class. I also hope to help students learn to evaluate their own learning process through the establishment of ‘I can’ statements.
In general, vocabulary notebooks should include the following information on new words:
Heading: – The Date and Topic
2) Meaning / Usage
3) Example (from class, book, article, etc.)
4) Student’s own example
5) Other (For example other common uses of the word, etc.).
I can statements and questions. (Student notes to self on questions or things they need answered in order to be successful.)

Hello, parents of students at Saint Giles…
I wanted to thank those of you who were able to stop by the Spanish classroom during Curriculum night (room 202 – Frawley building). I’m excited to be a part of such a warm and welcoming community! To answer some of the questions I received, I can provide the following information.
Spanish meets as follows: K-3rd grade (once/week), 4th and 5th grade (twice/week) and 6th-8th grade (3x/week). I’ve spent the first few classes getting to know your sons and daughters and finding out about their levels of Spanish. Students are placed according to grade rather than level of linguistic ability. Although there are mixed abilities within this academic setting, I foresee being able to differentiate learning for students as we move forward.
The goal will be for students to learn conjugation during junior high school and become familiar with different verb tenses by 8th grade. Students in the lower grades learn to communicate orally, and the written word is gradually introduced. By graduation, students will have seen a variety of text types (songs, articles, informational texts, poems, etc.). Although we are not able to offer full immersion at St. Giles for grades K-8, all students should benefit from the instruction, regardless of level.
You can help make the process of learning a second language more attractive to your child by asking him/her to talk about what he/she has learned in Spanish class. While you may hear tales of singing songs, playing jeopardy, watching videos, acting in a skit, you can rest assured that there will be a very academic and structured side to learning in addition to the entertainment. I am very interested in students enjoying the subject so that they will continue to pursue language-learning as a life-long venture.
